50/50 Sunday Donations

Social justice-Report to Coordinating Council October 2026 by Jan Lathrop:

Here are a few bullet points to bring you up to date on the BUU Social Justice Committee:

50-50 Share the Offering

July total for St. Andrews was $712

August total for Sopori was $751

- We voted not to add the UU Church of the Larger Fellowship as a 50/50 sharing partner as they had requested.

- We voted to add Youth on Their Own as our 50/50 sharing partner in November. They will participate in the Sunday service on Nov. 1.

 

Food donation at the Border

We took $174 worth of food to Voices From the Border in August for the women and children in Sasabe.

 

Guest, Susan Ruff

We heard from Susan Ruff, coordinator for volunteers canvassing for Legislative District 19 Democrats. She outlined the voter outreach program and get-out-the-vote program. We agreed to put a note in the Weekly Messenger. Susan also mentioned a medical debt elimination donation opportunity and left us cards to pass out at church. Jan said she will order get-out-the-vote postcards.

 

Amado Youth Center

A BUU member suggested we upgrade our donation box, which is a laundry basket right now. We also discussed including a half-sheet announcement in the Order of Service to draw awareness to the needs. We took three loads of donations to AYC in September and early October.

 

Locheil Grandmother Cottonwoods

We discussed the situation of volunteers sleeping in the last tree or on the ground to prevent the tree's removal for more border wall construction.

 

 Social justice-Report to Coordinating Council February 2026 by Jan Lathrop:

  1. There was an article in the Green Valley News about a Pima County Health Department mobile clinic, and they are looking for a place to park it. The committee will get more information including insurance issues. This would be perhaps a model for a healthcarefacility in Amado with it being next to the food bank and little free library.
  2. A budget for the Social Justice committee was submitted for $100 less than last year as BUU is running a deficit.
  3. The committee is exploring the possibility of BUU buying a water filter for Sopori Elementary School. They are awaiting a reply from the school itself.
  4. The committee is considering doing voter registration again this year.
  5. A journalist will be speaking Saturday morning 8:30-12:00 for Community Day at the UCCabout warrior shoes and immigration lawyers.
  6. BUU offerings of 50/50 are done for 2025 and a sign is hanging at the back of the Fullerroom showing the amount that was raised.
  7. The committee will be using their sign for the committee fair from last year.
